Light Up Your Christmas Holidays in Baton Rouge

The mild winters in South Louisiana afford a pleasant way to enjoy Holiday activities, and there’s no better place to celebrate Christmas than in Baton Rouge. Here are a few activities to help you get the most out of your stay with us at The Stockade Bed and Breakfast:

Festival of Lights
Santa and sleigh with tree in snowOn December 6th, Catch the Holiday spirit as this celebration transforms the winter sky into a wonderland featuring beautiful décor with a half-million sparking lights and a 35-foot Christmas tree in Town Square. Join in a magical train ride at the Old Governor’s Mansion, visit Santa at the Old State Capitol, and end the evening with a fireworks show. There will be dancing in the street, balloon artists and stilt walkers, the annual Reindeer Run, and lots more.

Cortana Kiwanis Christmas Parade
This parade has been taking place since 1949 and draws thousands of visitors to Downtown Baton Rouge each year. More than 80,000 people watch the parade live and thousands more watch it on television. Enjoy the music of marching bands, watch for celebrities, and see dance troupes as well as members of non-profit organizations and local businesses dressed in seasonal themes. There’s even a Battle of the Bands that features talented marching bands throughout the Baton Rouge area!

Zoo Lights at the Baton Rouge Zoo
You may not think of going to the Zoo to celebrate the holidays, but once you go, you will want to make this family event an annual tradition. From November 29th through December 30th, the Baton Rouge Zoo will feature a mile-long trail with more than 50 illuminated display sculptures of animals and traditional Christmas symbols. Children of all ages will be amazed at the larger-than-life displays including giraffes, lions, tigers, gorillas along with giant snowmen, Santa, toy soldiers, and other holiday figures. Some of the displays are up to 30 feet tall and many are animated. You’re sure to work up an appetite on this walk, so you’ll want to take advantage of the Flamingo Café. Bring home a little something to remember the magic from the Safari Post Gift Shop. The Safari Photo Booth is a great way to capture memories of family fun.

A Rural Life Christmas
Experience a 19th century Louisiana holiday celebration at the LSU Rural Life Museum.  Learn how our ancestors decorated with natural trimmings displayed throughout the museum’s grounds. Enjoy musical groups, demonstrating artists, storytellers, and open-hearth cooking by costumed reenactors. The event will conclude with a bonfire and, of course, a visit from Papa Noel!
